29/10/05 Meeting the Supervisor

Conor McArdle, DCU Lecturer of Telecommunications is my supervisor. We had a good first meeting in which he outlined the system to me, and made me aware of all the components I would have to integrate.
We’re looking at installing the Asterisk Open Source telephone exchange on a Linux OS. I’ll have my own computer in the lab, fitted with a FXS card so we can attach hard analogue phones and a network connection for VOIP softphones on the network. Next will be to install the Apache Web Server and a MySQL database ontop of it and attempt to connect via the AGI (Asterisk Gateway Interface) to access the web services. From here, where I go, who knows! I’m *thinking* of using the Text-to-Voice feature to possibly read out srcaped web pages… e.g. Froogle by phone?

Conor has leant me a book the O’Reilly Asterisk - Future of Telephony which is a nice read. It looks good, I’m excited!
