06/11/05 Multimedia Information Retrieval
In my final year at DCU we are covering a module called “Multimedia Information Retrieval” in the computer applications department. We have been given an assignment to have completed before Christmas to design & specify a new content index & retrieval system. I’ve always found the best ideas come when debating the merits of your own ideas with someone, as you begin to develop your idea as a more successful model. Having done just that with my project partner, this morning, this clicked:
A property search based not only on the descriptive information supplied with the house but coupled with a lat/long analysis of the location on a digital map, that reveals searchable geographic information:
- Closest town (Amenities)
- Surrounding green space (Countryside)
- Nearest train station (Transport)
- Distance to a busy road/motorway (Noise pollution)
- Airport or overhead flight paths

Update:
After explaining this on the phone to someone, I thought, maybe it could be used for valuation purposes?
If near a train line:
Close to Station +1 pt…. In the middle of a busy line -1pt with no near station.
etc…

I always think the neglected part of search is allowing the user to have more control over what they consider an important factor. Each attribute is going to have relevance, but how much that should weigh overall (and compared against others) is something that a user should decide. e.g. sliding scales saying this is important to me (being near amenities). I think the beta of MSN search does something like this in advanced mode where you adjust sliders to adjust relevancy for things like date, keywords, meta description etc.
Ah yes… found it: http://beta.search.msn.com/?qb=1&q=
Clicking the ‘Results Ranking’ tab. Nice find.
Hmmm, yes, I like that.
