11/03/06 Moblogging Tutorial - Irish Blog Awards

Moblogging The Irish Blog Awards

Tonight is the night of the much anticipated Irish Blog Awards in the Alexander Hotel, Dublin. While Geared Up didn’t make the shortlist, I was nominated and so I’ll be in attendance. Imagefile.ie are also the category sponsor of the ‘Best Photo Blog’, so it will be good to see who wins that one.

I will also be ‘moblogging’ from the event over on my primary blog Geared Up. Moblogging is ‘Mobile-Blogging’ or in other words using a camera phone (I’ll be using my Sony Ericsson W800i pictured above) and sending MMS messages by GPRS to flickr, which sends it onto the blog. I will be tagging everything irishblogawards on flickr during the night, so tune in!

I know not many people know how easy this is, so here is a quick tutorial…

Equipment Needed:

  • Camera Phone with MMS/Picture messaging.
  • Flickr.com Account (Free)
  • A Blog! (Free)

And here is the ‘howto’:

Configuration (The boring bit.)

  1. In Flickr, go into ‘My Account’ and choose [My Blogs], click [Setup a New Blog]… enter all the details following onscreen instructions.
  2. Under ‘My Account’ next click [Uploading by email], Flickr generates a random email address which nobody else knows for which you will send all your photos to. Give some default tags, e.g. the model of your phone, email, moblog, etc. It is the lower email address you want, the one that sends to Flickr and your blog. Save this as ‘Flickr’ in your phonebook. There are some settings you can play with here too, allowing you to customise the html posted to the blog, and which blog, etc.

Moblogging (The fun bit!)

  1. Take a photo on your camera phone
  2. Depending on the model phone, select [Send], or create a new MMS/Picture message and add the image to it.
  3. If you can, enter a subject line for your MMS, this will be the blog & photo title.
  4. Enter some text on the MMS, this will be the blog post body & image description.
  5. Add tags, enter them at the end of the subject line, or on a last new line in the body of the message with prefix ‘tags:’… e.g. “tags: irishblogawards alexanderhotel damienmulley”
  6. Click Send! And choose the entry ‘Flickr’ from your phonebook. Tada! You’re now a moblogger!

You can also edit the privacy levels of photos by modifying the email address:

foo13bar+friends@photos.flickr.com - Visible to friends

foo13bar+family@photos.flickr.com - Visible to family

foo13bar+ff@photos.flickr.com - Visible to friends and family

foo13bar+private@photos.flickr.com - Only visible to you

As mentioned, I’ll be moblogging this evening on Geared Up, and you’ll be able to view all photos from everyone tagged with irishblogawards on Flickr. Enjoy!

Robin was live blogging the Irish blog awards using his Sony Ericsson w800i. This was done by sending images via gprs to the special email assigned to him by flickr. You can either submit images straight to your flickr account or your website.
