17/05/06 Google Recording Your Links
Something I’ve noticed in the past few days… First Google Talk started it, and now Google Reader is doing it too…
When you click a link written by someone, they are sending you to the URL:
http://www.google.com/url?sa=D&q=ACTUAL_URL_HERE
Before reffering you through to the actual URL the person typed. This is no doubt to record metrics on which websites are being visited/clicked to determine the quality of them for page ranking.
It annoys me though, as it means you can’t copy the link direct from ‘Reader‘ into a blog post, you have to visit it first.
While on the topic, ByteSurgery is now recording your links too :-) You’ll see little tabs all over the place telling you how many visitors. Nice function, huh!

By recording link click-through, Google is building Google Trends.
I think Google Trends is following the search terms, not the clicks.
i.e. http://www.google.ie/search?q=podcast is one more onto the podcast trend
http://www.google.com/trends?q=podcast
