Google Results Golden Triangle

I’m sitting here in my free “I’m feeling lucky” Google T-Shirt so I thought I’d do a little post about Google. Enquiro have done some very interesting research writing a white paper on using eye-tracking to find the ‘Golden Triangle’ of a Google search results page. By tracking 50 users eye movements when the results page came up they could determine the zones (in red) where most people looked and the zones where no-one looked (in blue).

It shows very interestingly that the top sponsored result and first few organic results get 100% of readers attention while the rest of the organic listings trail off very quickly making the triangle shape. On the right of the image you can see the other sponsored results from Adsense only get a brief look-in (circa 50% of viewers).

Even with 50% (or the chance of the top spot at 100%) Google Adwords is still an excellent economic marketing tool to ensure you appear above the fold on a results page. Recommended.

UPDATE 16:02hrs: I hadn’t realised Google was ‘being evil’ (Their mission statement is “Don’t Be Evil”) check this out. Google is offering adsense for domain squatters. The cheek!
