06/11/06 I’m Selling Web 2.0 ‘WhichTag.com’ on eBay

UPDATE 7/11 0909hrs: Thanks to James, this idea of a tag directory has been mooted on 60 ideas in 60 days. It’s currently on their homepage and joint 3rd on the top rated!

Chris Crosby says:

One of my biggest complaints with tagging is the lack of consistency, and I think his directory is a great way to help solve it.

Right - I better get out of here and leave for my Graduation!

Original Post:

First up - this is just an idea of mine that hasn’t been implemented yet, of course you can steal it - but then it wouldn’t have the fancy domain to go with it, would it? I’ve listed the whichtag.com domain for auction on ebay as a bit of fun rather than a money spinning venture with its starting bid of €1! Bidders welcomed!

I’m cutting down on my domain names I own, simply because I have run out of time to develop them all. As each of my surplus comes up for renewal I will attempt to pass it on to a caring owner!

‘WhichTag.com’ is a domain and idea that I’m selling to create a directory of ‘tags’. Bloggers and web 2.0 advocates love to tag things, e.g. ‘TechCamp 2006′ = ‘TC06′ or ‘TC2006′ or ‘TechCamp2006′ who knows?

Therefore I’m proposing a directory of tags - almost like a domain name authority within itself where you register your tag, but by making a single source repository anyone can look up which tag to use for which event.

A user would register their tag on the site, and then place a small piece of script on their blog/site that would name the tag to use when talking about them. This tag could be clicked bringing up a page about the tag description. Obviously you could also search by keyword for the tag of an event or company. Plentiful API’s would exist with wordpress plug-ins and other widgets to make the whole process pretty transparent.

It’s just an idea - it’s something I’ve run out of time to do - I was planning to code it in Ruby on Rails. If you’d like the project, and the domain to go with it.. it’s all yours in this auction!

Make a bid on eBay?
