21/01/07 iWoz Book Review
I picked up a copy of iWoz in Stansted Airport last Friday, and must say, I’ve never enjoyed a book so much. At a very young age, Woz (Steve Wozniak) invented the Apple Computer, which as it happens was the first ever computer with a keyboard and monitor! Before that you were forced to move switches, enter punch cards and watch lights for your answers. Incredible guy- who through & through is an engineer at heart. The book avoids talking about the business side of Apple, the business jumps from him & Steve Jobs to going Public without much of a mention as Woz’s passion is the electronics of the time.
Pranks, inventions, technology, this is my type of book. Word of warning: this book is for true geeks who like to read about shift registers, transistors, resistors and bread boarding concepts.
Steve’s book has given me three things: 1/ The belief that I can, and should, remain an engineer throughout my life rather than be pushed to manage just people & finances. 2/ The confirmation that all my after-work moonlighting is worth it. 3/ The encouragement to actually go out and buy one of these (once OS X Leopard is out).
I have created a custom Amazon store of my recommended reading lists and book reviews. You can get your own copy of iWoz here.
