30/01/07 Idea Generation: Take A Shower

I was at the Internet People event by Robert Loch back in November. It was very good, and I got to speak with Alex Tew of the Million Dollar Homepage for a good while, it was the night he broke the story of PixelLotto.com which was seen on TechCrunch the next morning. Little did I know - but an article about the event appeared in the Guardian newspaper the next day.

The best advice on the night was the open mic session when one gent suggested:

“For really great ideas you can’t beat a good shit.”

The Guardian allows visitors to leave comments on their articles, one attendee left the following additional note to the night:

A story. I met a guy recently who has his best creative thoughts in the shower. He has now installed a white-board in there with special pens available so that he can record his best thoughts. He has now fine tuned the process so much that if he has a problem to solve he takes a shower, stops thinking about the problem and hey, presto, more often than not the solution jumps back at him.

For anyone who knows me - that could be me. My very very best ideas have clicked in the shower!

Note: Probably shouldn’t disclose this, but I think it’s a form of meditation! I’m regularly in up to 40min ’shower sessions’ just thinking, back at home in Dublin my dad had to move the main power switch to outside the door to get me out :-)

Heheh…. I was afraid to blog this before in case I’d be seen as too weird but now that I know I’m not alone….. many of the ideas behind feed grazing have come from my time in the shower. The biggest insight came from the actual shower unit itself - the realization that the shower rose has numerous small nozzles directing individual ‘feeds’ of water. But by moving the rose in various directions I was only under a certain subset of nozzles at any one time, effectively grazing that subset of feeds. So….. drumroll please.. the shower head rose is like an OPML file (ie. a collection of feeds) and moving the rose around is like grazing a subset of the OPML feeds.

Maybe people will still think I’m weird ;-)
