06/02/07 Race to 100: Read Me!

I’m in on Paul’s race to get the largest percentage RSS subscribers increase before the Irish Blog Awards.

I realise I have little to no chance of winning this, but hey - at least don’t unsubscribe on me! I’ve lost 5 readers already from 47 down to 42. Embarrassing.

Help me out here: Subscribe to my feed

Here’s a little something I’ve written on the topic:

What is RSS?
RSS (Really Simple Syndication) can be subscribed to, and read in your news aggregator or feed reader. It allows news articles, images & information to be sent to your desktop instead of you having to visit each website individually. RSS is a reusable, secure, timely technology that empowers users and ensures that we can effectively communicate together.

I’m new to this! How do I read RSS?
When you open an RSS file in your web browser you just see the ‘code’ that is being sent. To ‘read’ it, add the URL (web address in the toolbar) of this code to your news/feed reader as a subscription. Everyday you open your reader it will then show you the latest stories from your subscriptions.

Need a feed reader?
I’d recommend Google Reader as a web based solution. Or BlogBridge for a desktop solution if you’re stuck on dial-up.

(Note: You don’t need a Gmail account to use Google Reader, but if you want one I’ve still 88 invites remaining, so drop a request below.)

Robin,

I realise I have little to no chance of winning this

Actually the good news is that you’ve lost five readers. We’re starting the stats from today, so the lower the better.

It’s also biggest percentage increase, so you’re in with a very good change - all you need is a couple of people on Ken’s site to subscribe to you and you’ll be almost there.

Robin, I’ve never bothered to find out why but Feedburner stats swing wildly (at least mine do) so don’t get too discourage. I’ve regularly seen mine go up and down about 20% in a matter of days!
