18/05/07 Chinwag Live: London Widget Week
Thanks to Fergus (Nooked) I spent last night at Chinwag Live. It’s widget week in London which raised an eyebrow with colleagues in work - explained here… or maybe as an audience member suggested - “A tear-off from a website”.
I didn’t get to ask my question, but it was…
Google Adwords has moved from text ads to image ads to video ads, and now it’s rumored widget ads are next. This will give the worlds largest distribution network for the ‘parasitic widget’ (one that takes from the host site, rather than gives). Widgets have been famed for their ability to be optional (by either site/dashboard owner) but now widgets will start appearing on websites based on pay per click content matching. Will this bring widgets mainstream, or will they all turn into just ‘interactive banner ads’?
Met some very interesting people during the later parts of the night including Louise (Head of Operations, Channel 4) , Jamie (E4) and Mark (Head of Content, Eircom). Rafe, Ganesh (Nokia) says hi! And well done to Deirdre Molloy (check out her blog) & Sam for organising it all - the pub format worked extremely well for networking.
Steve Bowbrick was chair, and has some photos on Flickr.
Updated 24/5/07: To include mention of Deirdre too!

Hi Robin, glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the positive feedback. Twas actually yours truly that developed and programmed the event, with Sam’s able support of course. I’ve also written up my report here http://tinyurl.com/2w2yvu

RE: Your Blog… Subscribed!!!
No worries, I do update the blog occasionally :-) But I’m I’m bu****ed if I can get MyBlogLog onto it, or other widgety stuff. No time to discover my inner geek [sigh]
