24/05/07 Web Based File Manager

Can anyone recommend a web-based file manager for my new Ubuntu box? I need to make changes on the road when access to ssh is restricted. This is a tool I use to make quick edits all the time.

Requirements:

  1. textfile editing (on server)
  2. Chmod ability
  3. file uploads
  4. directory creation

Are there any other ‘bonus’ features I should be looking out for? Once installed, I’ll post my findings here.

(Note: I’m thinking of something like a free alternative to webshell4.)

Is ftp not option?

Hi Ciaran. Nope. FTP is often blocked behind firewalls. I need a shell that can also compress/uncompress.

grrr I presume you don’t allow html comments so have to type this again!

We use VHCS (http://vhcs.net) on a suse box for hosting and it has parts of Weeble Fm (http://weeblefm.sourceforge.net/) built in which mite help. Open source written in php, more info on freshmeat (http://freshmeat.net/projects/weeblefm/)

I use PHPfileNavigator to upload content via html forms. It does the trick.

You could try our Files Together software. It runs on linux and windows, does ajax and is free with 2 users. It also works on mobile phones and PDA devices.
