21/06/07 Reuters Volunteer Day - Cedar Centre

Cedar English

LONDON, UK - Reuters give each employee globally 1 day off a year to give to their community in a voluntary capacity. Through the Reuters foundation and a local brokerage I organised four Tech Grads to attend the Cedar Centre in the East London docklands with myself.

We spent the morning giving English classes to adults who’d recently moved to the UK and had little to none of the language. We held conversations with them, practiced useful terms for talking about themselves confidently in English and helped with grammar, pronunciation and sang English songs.

In the afternoon we were available to advise attendees at the drop-in centre on CV tips, interviews & computing. While upstairs we helped out spending time with the kids in the creche while their parents used the public computing services on the ground floor.

Note: I’m off mountaineering in the Italian Alps from Friday 22nd - July 1st. Please understand if email responses are delayed.

Well done to you, great idea from Reuters. When I worked for Jacobs Engineering we had a similar day once a year (same day for everyone) called Community Day. We picked a community where we were building something, maybe a pharma facility or whatever and tried to do something locally. One year we built a playground in a home for women and children escaping domestic abuse. Cool day, secret location and everything. What started out as a wasteland ended up as a great garden for all residents to use, in just one day. Thanks for reminding me of it! Hope you enjoyed your day!
