18/08/07 We both Spun-A-Web

DUBLIN, IRELAND - I met Anthony McG through blogging over the last few years. We’ve bumped into each other in the comment fields on blogs, and then met in person at the Irish Blog Awards. What I didn’t know was we had crossed paths years before.

Anthony posted back in March about stats on an old site. I clicked through, and get presented with a very familiar screen of StudentNet. Why did I know this? Why did I feel like I’d studied it in detail? It was because I had! Back in 1999 as secondary school students we had both reached the finals of Spin-a-web (now closed). We had gone head-head in the judging, both eager to win.

Little did we know we’d both meet again, and not recognise each others names but instantly recognise screenshots. Our faces had changed, our relic sites from the 90’s hadn’t.

This is a call out to everyone involved with Spin-A-Web back in 1999/2000, are you out there? Who’s now working in the industry? Did being involved in a competition like this at a young age help your career path?

Mission: Possible was my entry. Crazy it’s still online. I’d love to do something with the content on that site, I still love the whole concept of it. Tomorrow I’m meeting up with a long time maths-teacher/Mission:Possible-mentor/now-friend Tom Kendall.

UPDATE: I worked on Mission: Possible with Rob Synnott, we went to the same secondary school.

I should have mentioned in that post that you were M:P aswell!

I’ll do a full post on it soon.

:) It’s crazy remembering back to that time. There was a dinner before the results were announced wasn’t there?

Yup - which Harcourt St. Line won!!!

(apparently TCD received a take-down notice afterwards as they plagiarised the content all directly from some guys book!! TCD kept that one quiet).

I’m actually thinking of relaunching M:P with a fresh design to see what happens!

Oh yeah, Harcourt Street Line. I arbitrarily decided we didn’t like them at the time. At least now I know it was justified. lol

It’s a relevant topic so M:P could benefit from a re-design alright. Love the retro photo of Noel Dempsey here: http://www.bytesurgery.com/missionpossible/mp/briefing.html
