19/09/07 The Beauty of BarCamp
LONDON, UK - I flew back home in spring to attend ‘BarCamp Dublin’ at which I got to meet a fair few of the people I’d only managed to collaborate with online, increased my reading list, and made new contacts.
One of the new people I met was David Doran. David was a 5th year student still at school (now doing his Leaving Cert) and he reminded me of myself at that age when I was off winning those spiders - yet David was so much more technical than I was. I was suitably impressed that he’d travelled up to Dublin on his own to BarCamp. Would I of at that age? Probably not without someone really encouraging me.
On return home, I looked David up and saw his experience in PHP and thought David would be a great person to work with as my own skills transition away from coding towards functional design specification. I just don’t have the time to code every test idea on my own. Now I’m on a salary - I reckon I can feed some money back into these things.
I’m well pleased to be able to post here now to say David is doing some work for me on one of my projects. We’ve started by re-writing ‘FindMeA’ software to be able to launch new product domains with a single click like this, this and this. We should be able to also release upgrades platform wide, rather than upgrading each individual fork of the code which was always messy.
David gave me a demo of how far he’d got last night, and it was fantastic. As I redirected each domain DNS entry, he just popped up new new blank instances of the sites with a single click. Think WordPress MU for product directories. This is looking great, it’s so nice to have someone be able to translate my ideas!

Anyone in the North West locality of Ireland - take this great experience of BarCamp and travel to BarCamp Galway this weekend.
