24/09/07 Cyclecasting: My Truman Show
LONDON, UK - I was to mount a video camera on my bike handle bars and record a video podcast on-route to/from work everyday. Time is what prevents me from podcasting regularly, this is the only free time I have in my day, on my bike. It will also make pretty good viewing as I talk avoiding traffic.

My requirements:
- Digital Video Recorder that I can record short sharp bits on. Rants from 10s to 3mins at a go. I need to be able to do this with a trigger than I can activate while cycling. I’d like to “hold a button/lever down” to record, let go to stop. I’m happy for this to sit in my pocket/bag.
- A headset. There’s no way a mic on my handlebars will pick up the sound of my voice above the traffic
- A Camera. Small enough to mount securely on my handlebars, that I can clip off when I stop and take with me. If this comes as part of the recorder that’s fine. Or as an external unit.
- at the end of everyday I need a really easy way to download & edit my cyclecast before uploading to the web.
- I would like to be able to mount the same kit on a climber to record their climb in small 10s video clips.
Can you recommend the tech I need? I have no idea. But I am serious about doing this.
I’ll upload to Your Truman Show if I can. I’m happy to start with audio only if required.
-Robin

This is a completely rocking idea.

It should be compelling viewing - the phrase ‘car crash TV’ comes to mind
… although (as a fellow bike user!) I sinceleyhope that the ‘crash’ bit doesn’t happen :-)

Love this idea. Been thinking of similar since seeing a vid posted by some postgrad guy cycling through Rathmines into Trinity a year to the soundtrack of his iPod with Beetlebum and a couple of other rocking tracks. A quick look at you tube will bring up username bealbocht who is doing Dublin by Bike vids

I really like you doing this! You’ve got me focused on getting a decent lapel mic for my little Sony digital dictaphone.
I’m heading into town today to try get the right connectors. Niall left a comment on the recent post about it and he’s got himself a tidy little headcam unit, I may have to upgrade to that one!
