22/10/07 I’m learning Mandarin, or trying.

LONDON, UK - It makes me glad when I read things like this that I’ve started to attempt to learn Chinese (Mandarin).
In 2003, the combined market capitalization of China’s publicly traded Internet companies was $5 billion. Today, it is $50 billion. –Mary Meeker, Morgan Stanley (Oct ‘07)
With an employer with offices in 94 countries, data centres in 13, and news bureaux in 196 they’ve been good enough to offer us each a free online e-learning language course. I’ve found the online experience a treat - really interactive. For me, with my French & Irish struggles through secondary school I’ve found the 1-1 with my laptop as a tutor great.

I think it’s an excellent idea to learn Mandarin and have given thought to it myself. Having studied Japanese in college though I realize it’s a big commitment. Best of luck with it and please report on your progress.
