02/11/07 Draft: Battle of the Social Nets

BANGKOK, THAILAND - Morning from Asia! I’ve had a fascinating week working here, more on that later.. This is really a draft post as I’m just trying to form my thoughts while I watch history unfold infront of me. This is all about the politics, trends, tactics used in the fight between Googles new OpenSocial platform vs Facebook’s F8 (fate).

I’m going to see what comes out here by just typing.

* We revolve around objects. Success needs liquidity. Think of trying to compete against eBay, you just wouldn’t have the liquidity to steal their market. Those objects in a social net are people. GOOG has gone to partners Bebo, MySpace etc. to gain liquidity.

* The money is in the ad targeting data. Who cares about owning the actual site - all GOOG need is to know who knows who, and who’s doing what when with who.

* The platform with the most developers will win.

* Actual sites can go in/out of fashion. They can be fads. Your friend/network data will never be a fad, it will stay true your whole life. This is the valuable part.

* Considering its 6-12 months in the pipeline, It’s amazing this wasn’t leaked. I’d love to know how the announcement of F8 changed their brief.

* GOOG never wanted a share in Facebook, they knew what they had in the works and just inflated the price for MS to buy in with a 15B valuation!

* Facebook only opened up to 3rd party apps via F8 because it would higher their valuation price for an IPO. You just wait for it! Apps on FB have ruined the user experience, but gained mass media.

* OpenSocial will meet Jaiku who will meet the G-Phone. Talk about power.
