29/11/07 If I were Pixenate.com

LONDON, UK - Ok, I’ve had this series of posts in my head for a long time. Now it’s time to get writing! Irish online photo editing app Pixenate.com is my first target (hi Walter!).

Part of my current graduate placement is to decide what do I want to do?, where do I fit?, who am I?, what value do I add? It’s slowly clicking - I’m an ideas guy. I like to kick-start things. I’m good at enthusing, motivating and getting that heavy ball rolling. My psychometric tests show I’m a novelty seeker. A key factor to success is being a ‘finisher’, I am a ‘finisher’, but I just ‘finish’ earlier in the cycle with a handover!

Anyway! Back to if I were Pixenate.com.

Show me the money. It’s clear Walter’s business model is to sell to third party websites. They offer photo editing software to embed within your webapp. That’s where the money is, sure! But where’s is the Purple Cow?

You’ve got to watch out behind you in this game - while Walter may own the #1 result on Google, it’s only time before Picnik, Fauxto or Adobe PS Express catch up. So what can be done? - I say get the bloggers on-board!

What would I do? I’d sell to 3rd parties for cash-flow, but I’d also start my own niche photo editing service for bloggers/web-publishers. In all honesty, photo editing is a pain, why not automate it? It would work like this - how do I get images to my blog? Can I replace Skitch with an online tool? Yes! By adding:

  • Allow the option to save recorded sets of actions on Pixenate.com
  • Firefox add-on that allows right-click [pixenate this] option on images, with a sub menu listing my blogs
  • Image opens in pixenate and automatically applies a set of pre-saved actions for my selected blog. For me this would be, size to 640px width, give me a drag to crop option to select a 350px high window, sharpen, apply a watermark of my url in the bottom right corner, upload by FTP to my server (or hosting service), return to me a URL to copy & paste.
  • That only took a single click
  • While I’d only pay a small fee for that service, I’d damn sure tell everyone about it!
  • Cow. Purple. Got a Sneezer.

Ok, who’s next!? ;-)

-Robin.

[...] Robin muses about Pixenate and what he’d do with it. He talks about offering a service for bloggers to edit pictures. I’d like to add that I’d take the Facebook widget that already exists and make it a blog widget so people can play with Pixenate on all their friends’ blogs too and mess around with their pictures with an export option to a new Pixenate account. BTW, Robin is on my “ones to watch” list for 2008. Get to know him before he becomes well famous and charges 25k to turn up to talk at a BarCamp. [...]

@pat - your business model is too mysterious for me to analyse!! Really want to try a handset out too before commenting. Congrats on announcement last night.

@damien - haha, 2008 is far too early. Maybe 2010 ;-) cheers though.
