03/12/07 Everything is Miscellaneous: What do we actually want to map?

LONDON, UK - I’m reading ‘Everything is Miscellaneous” by David Weinberger (co-author of The Cluetrain Manifesto) and it’s making me think more about the real social graph of a business, a project very close my heart at present.

Far from the simple 1-1 accept-reject connections of Facebook/Linked-In/Bebo I’m beginning to believe this map contains…

- who works with whom,
- who trusts whom,
- who respects whom,
- who is comfortable to introduce to whom,
- who communicates with whom (quantities & paths),
- who reports to whom,

…and all these mapped as sliding-scale variables over time.

Weinberger points out that it is at the intersection of these connections, the bright-nodes, that innovation happens.

Those who stand at a busy junction in a city will see, hear & conceive more ideas than someone standing out on the straight section of a highway.

These bright-nodes are the core-people in your business.

-Robin.
