25/12/07 The Royalty of YouTube

DUBLIN, IRELAND - 25th December 2007 and The Royal Family of the United Kingdom want to connect with today’s youth through their channels of communication. 50 years after the first televised Queen’s Speech on Christmas Day they pick YouTube and created /theRoyalChannel to interact.

In typical fashion they got it all wrong wrong wrong.

All Comments Closed. How is this adopting the communication channel?!

Embedding Disabled. Right, isn’t that the point of this all?

1 hour after it was uploaded, there are only 218 views (maybe delayed statcounter though?) of the 2007 Speech.

Other interesting stats, the person logged in as ‘TheRoyalChannel’ has watched 72 other videos on YouTube! can we tell which ones?

The tags used were “Queen’s queen Speech christmas xmas” Not sure the Queen would approve of calling it xmas! Or maybe she would?

Added 20th of December and made public on 25th at 1500hrs. Interestingly this tells us that the Queens Speech is pre-recorded at least 5 days earlier, although she does do it in a single take apparently.

Meanwhile, the Queens Speech is not new to YouTube, fans have uploaded it each year since the beginning of the internet!

Good analysis. What does this point to? How do such establishments (like the Royal Family) get it pretty right in the traditional media (radio, TV, newspaper) but not on the web? I think we have probably at least another 10 years of such blunders to go before PR online comes in-line with PR offline.

It’s simple - they don’t even try. This isn’t about being broadcast to. It’s about us broadcasting to ourselves. What they should do is give us the tools to talk about them, (an embeddable video etc.). It’s the users that should be uploading them to YoutTube not the other way around.

They need to release control - something the queen is highly unlikely to do!
