20/02/08 The DOPPLR Effect in S.E. Asia

Feet Feet Feet.

SINGAPORE - The ‘Doppler Effect‘ is driven into my head from my physics classes. You can hear it in action every time an ambulance siren drives past you at speed.

The Doppler effect, named after Christian Doppler, is the change in frequency and wavelength of a wave as perceived by an observer moving relative to the source of the waves. The total Doppler effect may therefore result from motion of the source or motion of the observer or motion of the medium.

Meanwhile the DOPPLR effect is not far off this definition (DOPPLR is a website that alerts you when a contact is visiting the same town as you). I’d like to define that as:

The DOPPLR effect is the change in location of a person as perceived by an observer moving relative to the source of their hometown. The total DOPPLR effect may therefore result from motion of the source or motion of the observer moving relative to their respective hometowns and overlapping at the same moment in time.

Not seeing much S.E. Asia adoption on DOPPLR, two weeks ago I added the first tip on the blank Singapore page:

Web2.0 in Singapore? Meet me! - Hi, I’m over from the London web scene working in Singapore until July 08. If you’re passing through or live here, drop me a message robin at bytesurgery dot com. I would love to meet up.

Within a few days I had contact from 3 people and have managed to get some great nights tech-chat out of it in local bars.

Jeremy Wagstaff (Tech Journalist) - Writes the great Loosewire tech blog (suggest you subscribe!). Jeremy has worked, written & broadcast for the Wall Street Journal, Reuters and BBC World Service from Asia.

Aaron Oliver (Evangelist) & Aaron Chipper (Enhanced Product Development) - Who work for upcoming emerging markets mobile services firm Utiba (@Pat Phelan - you’d be interested in these guys.). A small but great part of their technology allows mobile phone holders to store cash and make payment using their credit phone for countries where traditional bank-accounts are unavailable.

Joe Drumgoole (Founder, PutPlace) - DOPPLR alerted Joe that his trip to Singapore would overlap with my time here and it put us in touch. I know Joe from previous events in Ireland but it was great to sit-down 1-1. I had never heard details on PutPlace’s intentions before, but it really is a fantastic vision. Joe’s enthusiasm (and the 2 jugs of beer) really energised me - thanks for dinner Joe!

All this in just over one week. Unreal! Share your trips with me on DOPPLR.

If you’re in Singapore, tonight I am attending an Emerging Markets seminar on Interactive Digital Media at the Microsoft Singapore Auditorium.

If I’ve ever seen a perfect example of the benefits of the ‘net and it’s communication and location-based potential, this is it.
Amazing!
