04/04/08 Network Building: Scoreboard In The Sky
SINGAPORE - Ever since I first heard of it - I’ve believed in the ‘Giant Karma Scoreboard In The Sky‘. It’s huge, and it’s got a big HOME & AWAY scores for every person you connect with. When you need a favour from someone, you must have a lead of that much karma first.
A point is scored for the home side every time you give a little karma to the person and vice versa. The karma doesn’t need to be big, it’s just a gesture, but each small gesture scoring a point.
My favourites are as simple as…
- Add someone to your IM client after a cold call to give a sense that you want to do further business.
- Forward on any industry news. Show you are thinking about their projects, not just your own.
Once you have enough of a lead, you can request a favour, using up some of your karma points without going into karma debt. Beware - negative actions, ignoring, out of the blue requests & broken promises will lose you points. A loss of trust will automatically be game-over.
The most important thing to remember is to never ever be on equal score with anyone. If someone equals your score, notch up another point - put the ball back in their court. Keep it uneven to keep constant flowing communications.
