08/04/08 Network Building: When Edges Collide
SINGAPORE - Think of innovation as like a chemistry lab in action. Mixing different compounds & materials together to form new materials at the edges where they bond - totally unseen before. Much like chemistry, innovation occurs when you throw two different people together made up of different knowledge compounds. When their compatible edges meet, they bond and form something new. A new idea.
Innovation occurs at the edges - not in the centre.
If you want to be innovative - it is important to become a many-edged shape with a huge amount of surface area. Accordingly, your network should be made up of all different shapes from many different walks of life. Otherwise, how will you find a shape that fits?
Note: I’ve expanded on the idea ‘innovation at the edges’ I read somewhere else but now cannot place the quote. Apologies!
Update 1515hrs - I’ve just seen JP’s post on a similar topic of edges. Maybe it was via JP I heard it.
