11/06/08 Google Sites For Project Tracking
CHICAGO, UNITED STATES - If you’re a very small business not using Google Apps to manage your online workspace I recommend you do. I’m not a heavy document author, and so I now exclusively using Google Docs (I haven’t used MS Word or Open Office in as long as I can remember). All my email gets filtered by Google Mail and I can’t fault it. As of starting my own business, I’ve begun using Google Sites to track projects too.
There are many flaws, including the fact you can’t export the data easily, but I like using it for its simplicity and lack of structure.
I created a ‘Site’ for each project and set up a template to add notes into as I think of them.

For finance I can link or embed Google Spreadsheets. My draft business plan links to a Google Doc. I have every page split into two columns and the right hand side is just bullet point notes as I think them up.
Under each site I’ve a set of development todo lists for different requirements. The lists are good, sortable, easy to customise, and I tick each item off as complete and drop the priority to ‘x’ once done.

For todo lists I really like the look of Things for Mac but need it to be web-based before I jump. I’ve been using Remember The Milk as I love the Gmail Plugin but hate the main site interface - the minute Google launch a todo list (which seems likely with the new Gmail Labs) I’ll probably shift there.
