11/06/08 of course it doesn’t work in IE6
CHICAGO, UNITED STATES - Dopplr Chicago Tips recommends Billy Goat Tavern around the corner from us for Cheese Burgers (It was on an SNL skit) so I’m off their for lunch in a minute and then back to the frantic code writing.
I’m bound only to a MacBook so I’m limited on my platform and browser testing capabilities. I knew we were good in FireFox and IE7 so I had a few tests run for me this morning by Jaimie on IE6 and of course all my CSS was goofed.
IE7 and FF2

IE6

So as we’re closing in on the beta trial launch tomorrow I’ve decided to block IE6 with a chunk of code on the top of the sign-up and login pages. You now get a nice redirect to upgrade to a browser less than 7 years old. If the text on my upgrade page is useful to anyone, pinch it - I pinched bits from browsehappy.com.
There’s a great way to test how browsers render themselves with your code. BrowserShots.org create reasonably instant screen grabs of your URL in up to 51 browser configurations. The below screenshot shows the “Create Account” page comparisons and the “Upgrade To FireFox” logo is visible on all IE 4,5,6 versions, success!

Now, I can has Cheezborger.

Hope the cheeseburger was good cos the rest of that post was Greek to me….. ;-)
Best of luck!!
Grim place but kinda authentic!
If I was a IE6 user, I think it would good to see an explanation of /why/ I should upgrade my browser. Perhaps something along the lines of: “Supporting a smaller set of browsers let’s us spend our time building and improving DFH, rather than struggling to fix small visual glitches”.
You’re right Andy - it should have more.
Hopefully it’s only a stop-gap!
