30/07/08 Pushing Ireland by Pushing Pix.ie

CHICAGO, UNITED STATES - This Tuesday’s bi-monthly push is pix.ie (already see PutPlace and 1Time). Pix.ie (pronounced pixie) is a photo-sharing site I don’t use, purely as I’ve already bought into Flickr.com (I pay an annual subscription). As a non-user, I feel unqualified to commentate on it, anyway, there’s been lots of rave reviews from people I trust - so Pix.ie must have merit.
Instead, I’m going to talk about what I’d do if I was going tete-a-tete with Flickr…
First thing is, I wouldn’t.
- I would look where Flickr is going, and then swim upstream in the opposite direction. My interface, my terminology, my character.
- I would be aware that Flickr’s success is community. My photos are there because my friends are there and we can see each others photos. Bring the community, bring me.
- If photo-sharing is actually about community, I’d look over my shoulder for Facebook (now the largest photo-sharing site on the web) and Bebo. Why would I go elsewhere if all my friends and photos are there?
- I’d come to the view that photo-sharing is about sharing photos in the open, and I’d make sure it was ultra easy to embed them anywhere. I’d realise I’m just a file-store with a nice browsing interface.
- Photos are about people, places, events. I’d focus on those things.
- The following things are pretty useless to me… people I don’t know, places I don’t want to see and events I didn’t attend. I’d get those out of my users way first.
- I’d choose a target demographic and go after them at all costs. Be it professional photographers, landscape photographers, adventurers, portraits, photos of events, etc. The rest will follow.
But I’m not starting a photo-sharing site, Marcus is…. good luck!
-Robin.

Right on the money as usual Robin! Everything you say above is spot on.
Cheers for the push!
